Perioperative Medicine in Action

This free online four-week course (3 hours learning per week) will help you learn about perioperative medicine: what it is, why it matters and how to improve patient outcomes and reduce healthcare costs. Too many patients die or suffer prolonged complications following surgery. Perioperative medicine is an emerging multidisciplinary specialty that aims to significantly improve the care of high-risk surgical patients. The course is aimed at medical and allied health professionals. It emphasises that enhanced care and improved outcomes depend on a multi-disciplinary team working together with a common goal. It’ll help you understand your role within the perioperative pathway and give you ideas for simple changes you can make within your own workplace to improve patient care. Implementing prehabilitation in Scotland

A number of resources to support anyone developing a prehabilitation service in Scotland (or beyond) is available on the main ‘For Professionals’ page.

Maggie’s Universal Prehabilitation Workshops

You can refer or signpost people to a universal prehabilitation workshop at your local Maggie’s.

Universal prehabilitation workshops are available at all 8 Maggie’s centres in Scotland. The workshops introduce the concept of prehab to attendees and cover diet, physical activity and psychological wellbeing. Should people require more support following the workshop, cancer support specialists are on hand to help, and they can signpost people appropriately.

A video has been produced for each centre that can be shared with those interested in knowing more. Each video shows the local centre and introduces some of the staff working there. It therefore helps those new to Maggie’s understand what to expect to expect before they go.

Should you wish to refer a patient and/or their carer, you can contact the centre directly. We encourage you to share the video with those being referred, and to tell them a little bit about what to expect. Your local centre can provide you with written materials, and they are happy to talk to potential referrers about the prehab workshops and all services they offer.

Each Maggie’s workshop was evaluated during the pilot phase. You can read about the impact of the workshops here.
